COVID-19

Researching the societal impact of Covid-19

The social impact of COVID-19 on Dutch cities and the country as a whole was enormous. Large-scale survey research conducted in Rotterdam, The Hague, Amsterdam and nationwide showed that several vulnerable groups, such as the less educated, the elderly and people with poor health, were hit hard by the crisis. In addition, "new" vulnerable groups such as the self-employed and people with temporary jobs, including many young people, were also hit hard. The survey consisted of four different measurements between April 2020 and March 2021.

Risbo is also participating in a long-term study led by Prof. Godfried Engbersen and Dr. Erik Snel on the "Social consequences of COVID-19," in particular the impact on social cohesion, which has been running since April 2020. The research has been made possible by a ZonMw grant from the Knowledge about Corona and Covid-19 program, Resilience of Society.

Corona & cohesion

Even after the pandemic, the effects of COVID-19 on Dutch society are noticeable. Citizens' trust in national and local governments and the RIVM remains low, and there seems to be increased polarization in society. People who think differently about the government and the corona approach no longer seem to interact with each other. Also, the willingness to follow new measures appears to be highly dependent on clarity about their necessity. These are some of the findings of the "CORONA & cohesion" study.

Update & conclusion (March 2024)

In the final report (only available in Dutch), the researchers did not limit themselves to the data of the latest study, but also tried to incorporate the findings of the earlier studies on the societal consequences of the pandemic. This provides a broader picture of some relevant societal developments regarding the societal consequences of COVID-19 from the beginning of the pandemic (March/April 2020) to the post-pandemic period (September 2023).
