Migration, integration & participation

Groep mensen van diverse achtergronden die samen werken aan een tafel

Over the past decades, Risbo has accumulated extensive experience in researching issues of migration, participation and integration. Through our research, we identify the challenges faced by migrants and their children. Through the data and insights we provide, we hope to contribute to solving educational disadvantages and to provide fair and equal opportunities for migrants in the labor and housing market.

In 2024, Risbo will start a multi-year research program to gain insight into migrant workers' own experiences of their position in the Netherlands. In addition to this 'satisfaction survey', Risbo will investigate whether the efforts resulting from the Roemer measures are also reflected in a better position for labor migrants. Risbo also examines integration and developments in proportionality in the areas of education, income, housing and security, as well as perceived discrimination, and levels of trust of both long- and relatively recently settled migrant groups.

In the past, Risbo conducted research on the position of children of low-skilled migrant workers, as well as a multi-year study on the social position of Roma and Sinti. Furthermore, Risbo has studied the social position of people with a migrant background and its development over time, as well as labor migration from the new EU countries and the challenges this poses for municipalities in areas such as housing and guidance towards employment.

For these studies, we use a variety of research methods. We often use information from existing registrations, but we also regularly conduct fieldwork among the migrant groups themselves. These include structured surveys, but also (in-depth) interviews with people from the target groups or experts. Furthermore, in most studies secondary sources are consulted, such as literature, existing databases and registers.
