University Teaching Qualification

The starting point for all teachers
Risbo BKO participants

Risbo offers the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) to lecturers within and outside Erasmus University Rotterdam. Our team of professional educational coaches organises this trajectory several times a year. During the trajectory they take you on a journey where you will reflect on your vision on education en your own teaching skills, inluding designing education and assessments. Once you acquire the UTQ, you have officially qualified as an academic teacher, which is also formally recognized by other Dutch universities.

Target group

The UTQ is mandatory for all teachers connected to a Dutch University. During the trajectory we ask you to be involved in (co)coordinating a course, and to teach a course. In case you are only involved in teaching but not in designing education, the DDE-qualification might be a more suitable trajectory for you.

Objectives

  • Write your personal vision on education.
  • Design/or improve a course following the principles of constructive alignment.
  • Deliver engaging education, that meet the students’ learning needs.
  • Supervise student activities in such a way that the students improve their learning process.
  • Design and construct assessment(s) based on the quality factors: validity, reliability, and transparency.
  • Reflect on the UTQ trajectory by showing your progress on the critical behaviors.
  • Write a plan of improvement(s) for your course and how this relates to your personal vision on education.

Content and form

The UTQ consists of five sessions of 3 hours each, which take place every two weeks:

  1. Kick-off
  2. Design
  3. Deliver
  4. Supervise / Formative Assessment (you can choose)
  5. Assess

The UTQ has a blended set up, which means that each module starts with an online preparation in our learning environment. During the workshop session you will use your preparation work as content for the session. This gives us the opportunity to deepen your knowledge on the content and strengthen your skills with engaging activities in the session.

Throughout the whole trajectory, you will work on improving and building your own teaching portfolio. For example, we ask you to improve the student manual of your course. Your educational coach will support you in writing your portfolio and will also observe one of your teaching sessions. The UTQ trajectory finishes with a graduation session where you will reflect on your progress, on the critical behaviors during the UTQ, and how you would like to further develop as a teacher.

The UTQ enabled me to get a better understanding of WHY I teach, and how I go about it.

Time investment

Following the UTQ trajectory requires about 70 hours. When registering for the UTQ, we would advise you to reserve 4-6 hours per week, so you can do the preparation work and keep up with writing the portfolio in addition to following the sessions.

  • Sessions: 15 hours
  • Preparation work: 15 hours
  • Lesson observation & feedback discussion: 2 hours
  • Writing your portfolio: 30 hours
  • Graduation session, including preparation: 4 hours
  • Other: 4 hours
