CLI MicroLabs for EUR teachers

Risbo has developed several modules, MicroLabs, in collaboration with the CLI (Community for Learning and Innovation): short, blended how-to modules about specific didactic problems. Due to the personal and interactive character, only four to six teachers can participate in each MicroLab. The duration is four to six weeks, depending on the MicroLab.

Each MicroLab has a clear object and a clear result. After a preparation in the online learning environment, the teacher sets to work on his own teaching materials in a physical session. Depending on the subject, the MicroLab continues online or is succeeded by another physical session. Finally, the teacher creates a Proof of Competence for his or her own teaching, demonstrating in an authentic way that the object of the MicroLab has been achieved by way of a tangible result that can be used in his or her own teaching.

How to accommodate differences in prior knowledge
In this module, you learn how you can measure differences in prior knowledge between students and how you can use these differences in designing your course. After the module, you will have an overview of methods and material to stop the gap in prior knowledge.

How to blend your course with Canvas
In this module, you learn how to set up your Canvas course with active blended learning. After the module, you will have interactively redesigned your course in Canvas with various learning activities.

How to create an educational video
In this module, you learn how to make an educational video to be used in your own course. You write the script for the video yourself, (possibly) make a corresponding PowerPoint presentation, and then record – after you have taken a camera training – your knowledge clip (about six to nine minutes) in the Erasmus Studio.

How to design an assessment plan and matrix
In this module, the focus is on selecting assessments for your course with the help of an assessment plan. In this module, you prepare your own assessment plan and learn how to work with an assessment matrix, a blueprint of the test that gives you insight into how learning objects are represented in the test.

How to construct MC questions and exams
In this module, you learn how to create reliable multiple-choice questions for your test and you are introduced to the quality requirements for multiple-choice exams. After this module, you will have created or improved your own multiple-choice exam.

How to construct open-ended questions & rubrics
In this module, you learn how to formulate good open-ended questions and assignments. Additionally, you are introduced to the possibilities of rubrics to enhance the reliability and transparency of the assessment. After this module, you will have created or improved your own model for open-ended questions with answers or assignment with rubric.

How to create an inclusive learning environment
In the ‘Diversity and Inclusion’ flash module, you learn how to create a learning environment in which your students can and dare to show what they are capable of, regardless of their background. This flash module is intended for teachers who want to give their students a successful study experience.

How to make your lectures interactive
In this module, you learn why it is important to ensure that students remain committed and active during a session, what kinds of activities and theatre techniques you can use to achieve this, and how you can integrate this with your teaching plan and the execution of your lecture.

UTQ new style

In April 2018, Risbo started offering the UTQ (University Teaching Qualification) new style. Under the UTQ new style, the participant focuses on designing, executing, testing and evaluating education. Giving guidance to individual students is also a competence under the UTQ. In addition, the teacher formulates his view on education. The theme of inclusive higher education is the leitmotiv: suitable and challenging education should be provided for all kinds of student groups, regardless of their backgrounds.

The participants in sessions under the UTQ new style are enthusiastic. The blended setup of the process is highly appreciated: the participants can prepare independently via the digital learning environment and then share their results in theme-based sessions with peers and educational trainers.

Setup of the new UTQ process
Participants start with a kick-off meeting at which they are introduced to each other and to the setup of the process. The kick-off is followed by three theme-based sessions:
  • Designing education
  • Assessment plan and educational activities
  • Assessment structure & evaluation
Participants prepare online, using videos and assignments, so that there is room for application and for feedback from peers and experts during the sessions.

At the sessions, the participant also works on five Proofs of Competence in a digital portfolio. In all of this, the participant’s current teaching practice is taken as a point of departure. The products of this process, such as an educational view, a new course manual, a blended course design and a well-structured test, have direct added value for the participant and can actually be implemented in education.

Inclusive Class workshop for ESL tutors

Commissioned by the EUR Diversity Office and ESL, Risbo organised a two-hour Inclusive Class workshop in February 2018, after ESL tutors had noticed that teaching a diverse tutor group involved some challenges. The workshop consisted of discussions in small groups and plenary discussions about possible causes of drop-out and efficiency differences between groups (by gender, ethnic origin and prior education), related to the respective participant’s own teaching practice. Additionally, participants responded to a video of a class situation in which students were excluded. The idea was to make tutors aware of the impact of teacher behaviour on student behaviour. In March 2018, a follow-up session was organised in which tutors could share which workshop elements they had put into practice.

Study Skills module for students with a refugee background

Risbo will organise a Study Skills module at the EUR in September 2018 for future students with a refugee background. The module is part of the Preparatory Year Erasmus, which EUR offers to highly-educated refugees in preparation for studying in Dutch higher education. The module is intended to help students become familiar with the required study skills, such as working in project groups, managing time, giving and receiving feedback, and giving a carefully prepared presentation. The module has been set up in a way that participants actively participate in the module sessions by means of assignments (for practice). Risbo will also organise the module in September 2018 (for the fourth time) in the Intermediate Programme for refugee students of Boswell-Bèta, an educational institution for science courses in higher education.

Apply now: CEL Academic Teaching Lab, Innovate your course in two days!

The CEL Academic Teaching Lab is an exclusive opportunity for university teachers to immerse themselves in educational innovation for two days. The participants collaborate with colleagues and experts to improve their academic education through very practical and hands-on learning. The next edition of the Academic Teaching Lab will be organized on Thursday the 6th and Friday the 7th of December 2018.

What is it?
The Academic Teaching Lab aims to provide teachers and educators with inspiration, flow and focus to improve the teaching they provide and the learning they facilitate. Together with educational experts and advisors, learning developers, teacher trainers and other professionals, ideas for development will be refined and various solutions explored.

Who can participate?
A total number of 12 teachers from the universities of Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Rotterdam are invited to come and grapple with ideas for innovating their courses (i.e. approximately 4 per university). Experience in innovating education is not required. The University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) or exemption is required to participate. Candidates are selected through assessment of educational improvement proposals.

Practicalities
Participation in this unique opportunity is free of charge, including hotel accommodation and catering. To apply teachers are requested to write a short proposal. The proposal will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
  • Concrete products: What will be the concrete products of your two-day work?
  • Innovative character: What makes your project proposal innovative?
  • Effect on student learning: How will your project results affect student learning?
  • Constructive alignment: How will your project results be constructively aligned?
  • Applicability in teaching: How will you use the project results in your courses?
Submission requirements:
  • A UTQ qualification or exemption;
  • Make sure the proposal is no longer than 2 A4 pages;
  • The criteria above have to be used as paragraph titles in the proposal;
  • The proposal has to be submitted by e-mail to info@educationandlearning.nl.
  • The registration form has to be filled out (see below).
