A new edition of the Leadership in Education Course has started!

In January a new edition of the Leadership in Education Course started! Together with OC Focus and ICLON, Risbo is organising this course from the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for Education and Learning (LDE-CEL). The seventeen participants consist of programme directors, bachelor and master coordinators or other parties responsible for programmes or parts of programmes: five from EUR, six from TU Delft and six from Leiden University.

At the first meeting, the main theme was evidence-based education. This was expressed through the question: ‘What do we know works when it comes to how students learn, and how can we use this evidence in our own programmes?’

Throughout the course (which runs until January 2018), all the participants will work on the implementation of their own educational innovations at curriculum level. During a symposium in January 2018, the results of the educational innovation projects will be shared with interested parties from EUR, TU Delft and Leiden University communities.

Senior University Teaching Qualification course (SKO) will start in June 2017 (Dutch) and in January 2018 (English)

All senior lecturers with enthusiasm and ambition in the field of educational innovations should note: we are going to start a new Senior University Teaching Qualification course in the Dutch language in June 2017! The kick-off meeting will be held on 21 and 22 June. In January 2018 an English-language version of the course will start. The course will last about six months and begins with an inspiring and active two-day educational lab, during which participants will get off to a flying start on their educational innovation projects.

The course also offers education-related coaching, peer supervision meetings, plenary sessions, peer review and a concluding symposium. During the course, the participants complete a digital education portfolio with supporting documents pertaining to the SKO competences. The results of the SKO participants’ projects will be presented during a symposium for colleagues, students and other interested parties. The course will conclude with a final interview in the presence of the coach, the supervisor and the SKO Steering Committee.

MOOC Momentum! Economics from a pluralist perspective MOOC launch with more MOOCs on the way!

2017 started with the launch of Erasmus University’s 5th MOOC. ISS and RSM collaborated together with Risbo to develop a MOOC that provides a critical perspective on the university’s top field of expertise - Economics. Top academics Irene van Staveren (ISS) and Rob van Tulder (RSM) take you on a journey where they will approach and consider four major economic theories with different perspectives.In essence, this MOOC teaches you what you wanted to know about Economics, but were too afraid to ask. And we’re not done yet! 2017 promises to be a very busy MOOC year for Erasmus. Before the summer, we expect to launch 5 more MOOCs (by IHS, ISS, the department of philosophy and RSM), and with several more MOOC launches in the pipeline after summer.

UTQ new style

Recently, the EUR adopted a new educational vision. This vision pays considerable attention to ‘active blended learning’. The explicit ambition is for the students’ learning process to be central to their education, and for our education to be innovative and based on scientific insight into how students learn effectively. Risbo is adapting the (Basic) University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) course to ensure it is in line with EUR’s new vision of education and learning. Developments in this respect are currently underway. This means:
  • A renewed digital learning environment with up-to-date and inspiring educational resources.
  • Greater exchange between UTQ participants and the possibility of peer feedback.
  • Participation in interactive meetings which deal with the main themes in the UTQ course.

The new UTQ course is intended for all lecturers who want to acquire a UTQ qualification.The new style UTQ course is expected to have been fully developed before the summer.The exact starting date of the renewed UTQ course will be announced in a special newsletter.

Study Skills for Refugees Module

Boswell-Bèta, an educational institute that offers access courses to students who want to enter higher education in the Netherlands, has asked Risbo to arrange a study skills module for its refugee students. In the period March 2017 to May 2017, Risbo will run a pilot module in collaboration with Boswell-Bèta. It is anticipated that the module will be offered to all Boswell-Bèta’s refugee students in September 2017.

Education and training of Programme Committees

On the instruction of the Executive Board, Risbo has developed a proposal aimed at enhancing the knowledge sharing and level of professionalisation within EUR’s programme committees. The activities described will be implemented and evaluated in three pilots.

Activity 1. Supported session: development of a clear vision with critical success factors.
The goal of this professionalisation component is to help programme committees define their place and tasks in a programme’s education quality cycle (PDCA).
As well as safeguarding quality in accordance with formulated Critical Success Factors (CSF), the programme committee can also take the initiative to develop proposals for improvement and innovation.
An educational consultant will join one of the programme committee’s scheduled meetings, the theme of which will be the formulation of a vision with CSFs.

Activity 2. Development of a digital learning environment and a meeting for new programme committee members.
A training programme for new programme committee members will be run two to three times a year (depending on requirements). The training programme will feature a blend of training types. New members are given prior access to a digital learning environment in which they can meet each other virtually, find general information and inspiration, and exchange good practices.
The meeting will include in-depth discussions of current issues, the assignments and new members’ questions.

Activity 3. Specific skills workshops for programme committee student members.
Compared with members who are lecturers, student members of the programme committees have less experience regarding ‘influencing policy processes’, ‘meeting techniques’, ‘implementing an evaluation’ etc. Workshops are offered several times a year to offer the student members extra support and to practise specific skills.
Short interactive programmes will be developed for these workshops, and they will, for example, include making use of training actors for role play sessions.
