MicroLab: How to activate students in small groups?

In this MicroLab, you will learn how to increase the learning efficiency of small-group lectures and tutorials by using activating teaching methods. This MicroLab consists of two parts: an online preparation and two workshops. During the workshops you will experience the effects of different activating teaching methods and you will find out how you could use these methods in your own education. In addition, you will set up your own lesson plan for more efficient tutorials, practical meetings or small-group lectures. This MicroLab focuses on small-scale educational meetings with a maximum of circa 20 participants (in contrast to the MicroLab on Interactive Lectures).

Goals / competencies
After participating in this MicroLab, you are able to do the following for your own small-scale educational meetings:
  • Select the appropriate active teaching methods for your lesson
  • Develop a lesson plan using activating teaching methods in your educational meeting;
  • Reflect on your own strengths and improvements in delivering an activating teaching method in your own education.

Target group and required prior knowledge
This MicroLab is intended for teachers and tutors who want to use activating teaching methods for small groups of students, such as in teaching groups, tutorials and practical meeting. The MicroLab is designed in such a way that it is relevant for teachers in Problem Based Learning (PBL) courses as well as other teaching methods. No prior knowledge is required for this MicroLab.

Form and time investment
The MicroLab has a blended character. Participants will start in the online Canvas environment (about 1 hour), where you will watch an explanation about interactive learning and think about a small-scale lecture/tutorial/practical meeting in your own course in which you want to work with activating teaching methods. In the first workshop, participants will experience the effect of different activating methods (2 hours). In preparation for the second workshop, participants will further develop their own case with one or more suitable activating teaching methods. In the second workshop, all participants demonstrate the teaching method they have worked out and receive feedback from peers and the trainer (2-3 hours). To conclude, each participant performs the teaching activity in his or her education. Participants can observe each other in the educational meetings.

Assessment and badge
The MicroLab will be completed with a Proof of Competence, which consists of:
  • A lesson plan that includes an activating teaching method;
  • To carry out the activating teaching method during an educational meeting,
  • Reflection on the execution of a teaching activity in your own education.

You will get a CLI/Risbo certificate, a LinkedIn badge and a HR-registration of completion, when you have completed all three parts above.
